I think I’m going to take a trip to Duluth and go test drive this tomorrow.

I’m not 100% into it, my heart still says Miata, and my wife still says “4 seats!” Mainly I figure it’s a good opportunity to find out if a newer VW is something is be interested in at all. This is basically a GTI in a smaller body, and I’m okay with that. The age, and mileage to price ratio I pretty dang good to. Thanks Diesel gate for lowering the price of all used VWs!

Kinja'd!!!

I’ll have to check out some other dealerships and see if there’s anything else I’d be interested in.

I have some questions here. 1why does the boost gauge go up to 35? And 2 what is that gauge in the middle?

Middle gauge looks like it’s for lap times!

That’s what I was thinking.

Looks like a solid NP to me.

I like this idea ... what else have you looked at?

That’s what I’m thinking. 53,000 miles might as well be new in my world. And it’s only 6 years old. The newest cars I’ve ever perchased was my wife’s 2010 Fit which was 5 years old at the time.

I haven’t gone to look at anthing uet, but my number two pick right now is this. http://www.millerchev.com/VehicleDetails/used-2006-Mazda-MX_5_Miata-Base-Rogers-MN/3136727013#promo

Well honestly it’s my number one pick, but my wife really doesn’t want to buy a two seater.

The current Beetle isn’t bad looking either. The proportions are much better than on the older cars.

Not only that - I don’t know where you live, but a RWD car is a bad choice for a winter environment. That’s why I talked a friend out of a BRZ and into an Imprezza. Except she bought a Jetta. But I did save her from buying an Audi S4 that, when she got the inspection I insisted on, turned out to need an engine!

Yeah, I remember when it first came out thinking “wow I’d drive that” I would want to get a set of the classic wheels. They’re alloys but looks like old dog dish steelies.

The classic wheels are a must have on these.

I live in a town on Lake Superior that has snow on the road so 4 months a year at least, but I’m up for the challenge.

Ohhhhhh good choice. My vote is still with the Mazda but those new Beetles are a guilty pleasure of mine.

As to the 35psi.... I guess that’s VW’s way of telling you to turn up the boost, yo

I’ve been pretty happy with mine but I do wish the suspension was a little more sporting. My god that price is amazing, though. I paid more (albeit with a vw cpo warranty) and thought I got a good deal.

Of if you’re going down this road: used GTI?

The Beetle is about 3 grand cheaper than any GTI I could find with similar miles, and even then the GTIs has 65-80,000 miles.

I’ve had it 6 months and not used the warranty at all. For whatever reason the beetles have better reliability rankings than say the golf(and most modern VWs are better than people give them credit).

Things I like:

Trans and engine; hatch is pretty practical; rear seat is pretty spacious and my daughter can crawl in without too much fuss; steering is pretty good.

Things that could be better:

Its A little bigger than I think I wanted and at first i didn’t realize it; gas mileage is worse than I expected; the previously noted soft suspension(it’s not bad but Not on gti levels).

I think if I had GTI shocks and some lowering springs I’d be happy with it. It actually rides a little high(5.5 in ground clearance) so some lowering wouldn’t ruin daily driving. The tires that came on my car I don’t really care for either.

Finally, it doesn’t have a sport mode. I’ve got a theory that in “stopwatch” mode it may have some slight throttle response changing but I haven’t figured out if that’s true. Also, you can’t disable traction control unless you do some rewiring.

Also, I haven’t tuned mine but it’s an option. Torque steer isn’t bad(not really noticeable) in stock form.

I still want to get into RallyX so I don’t mind a bit of extra ground clearance. You did make me just realize that there’s a hand full of plug and play tunes for these cars. A throttle response and boost tune, a long with sway bars, and shocks cold make a huge difference.

I also just found a Veloster turbo Spec R a few miles away I’m going to test drive that as well.

I wanted to try a turbo veloster but never found one close by in my price range.

The big thing about a turbo beetle is yes, most things mkv and mkvi are plug and play. It’s good out of the box but the aftermarket is good(just wish I had more money to spend on such things).

If you never driven a Mini Cooper. Try to find a 2011 or later. It was admittedly a better driver than the beetle but practicality (and warranty) won out.

Also, last thing, the boost gauge starts at 0 for atmospheric pressure, which means 0 is really 15 on the gauge(explaining its appearance where 0-15 is small and shaded and the gauge is really meant at measuring 15-30 or in reality 0-15)
